What Is the 485?

Your bridge between graduation and permanent residency

The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) lets international students who have recently completed an eligible Australian qualification live, work, and study in Australia for a set period after their studies end.

Unlike many temporary visas, the 485 places no restrictions on which industry or occupation you work in. You can work full-time, part-time, or start your own business. You can also include your partner and dependent children in your application.

Importantly, the 485 is often used as a strategic platform: it gives graduates the time and work experience they need to qualify for employer-sponsored or skilled migration permanent visas.

Significant Changes Since July 2024

The stream names, age limits, eligible qualifications, visa durations, and English language requirements all changed in 2024. If you have relied on advice from before mid-2024, it may no longer be accurate. Always get current legal advice before lodging.

your pathway

Work Anywhere, in Any Role
No occupation restrictions. Work full-time in any industry, sector, or role while you build your career and professional reputation in Australia.

Bring Your Family
Your partner and dependent children can be included in your 485 application. They receive the same work and study rights as you.

A Real Pathway to Permanent Residency
Use your 485 period to accumulate skilled work experience, reach points thresholds, and qualify for subclass 189, 190, 491, 482, or 186 visas.

Healthcare Entitlement
Depending on your country of origin, you may be entitled to Medicare benefits while on the 485. Your partner may also be included.

The Two Streams

Which stream are you applying under?

Since July 2024, the 485 visa operates through two distinct streams. Which one applies to you depends entirely on your qualification level. Getting this wrong is one of the most common application errors.

1

Stream 1

Post-Higher Education Work Stream

For graduates who completed a Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, or Doctoral degree (PhD) at a CRICOS-registered Australian institution. This is the most common stream for university graduates.

  • Qualifications: Bachelor, Masters (coursework or research), PhD / Doctorate
  • Age Limit: Under 35 (Bachelor / Masters coursework); Under 50 (Masters research / PhD)
  • Visa Duration: 2 years (Bachelor / Masters coursework); 3 years (Masters research / PhD)
  • Skills Assessment: Not required
  • Field of Study: Any field, no occupation link required

2

Stream 2

Post-Vocational Education Work Stream

For graduates with diploma or trade qualifications that are closely linked to an occupation on Australia's skilled occupation list. A positive skills assessment is required before lodging

  • Qualifications:Diploma, trade certificate, or vocational qualification

  • Age Limit: Under 35 years

  • Visa Duration: Up to 18 months

  • Skills Assessment: Required from a relevant assessing authority

  • Field of Study: Must be closely related to a listed occupation

How Long Can You Stay?

Visa duration by qualification

The length of your 485 visa is determined entirely by your highest Australian qualification. These durations apply to applications lodged on or after 1 July 2024.

Including Honours

Master's (Coursework)

2yrs

Eligibility Requirements

Do you meet the criteria?

The 485 visa has strict, time-sensitive eligibility rules. Every requirement below must be satisfied at the time of application. Missing even one can mean a refusal.

Study Requirements

  • Completed an eligible qualification at a CRICOS-registered institution
  • Studied for at least 2 academic years (92 weeks) across at least 16 calendar months
  • Study must have been physically undertaken in Australia (not online from overseas)
  • Online study between 1 Feb 2020 and 25 Nov 2023 may still count under COVID concessions
  • Graduate certificates are no longer eligible from 1 July 2024 onwards

Timing and Status

  • Must apply within 6 months of completing your eligible qualification
  • Must be in Australia when you lodge the application
  • Must hold a valid Student visa (subclass 500) or have held one within the past 6 months
  • Have not previously held more than the permitted number of 485 visas
  • AFP (Australian Federal Police) check must be applied for before, not on the same day as, your 485 application

Age and English

  • Under 35 years of age at the time of application (most applicants)
  • Under 50 years of age if you hold a Master's research or PhD qualification
  • Under 50 if you hold a Hong Kong or British National (Overseas) passport
  • IELTS overall score of at least 6.5, with no individual band below 5.5
  • English test must have been taken no more than 12 months before application date
  • IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) accepted for tests taken from 7 August 2025

Critical Updates

What changed, and why it matters to you

The 485 visa has undergone some of the most significant rule changes in its history. If you have not received advice since mid-2024, assume things have changed.

July 2024

Streams Renamed

The "Post-Study Work stream" became the "Post-Higher Education Work stream" and the "Graduate Work stream" became the "Post-Vocational Education Work stream." More than a name change, each stream also has updated eligibility criteria.

July 2024

Age Limit Reduced to 35

The maximum age for most 485 applicants dropped from 50 to 35 years. Exceptions apply only for Masters research and PhD graduates (still under 50), and Hong Kong or British National Overseas passport holders.

July 2024

Shorter Visa Durations

The previous temporary extensions for graduates in skills shortage areas were discontinued. Duration is now strictly based on qualification type: 2 years for Bachelor and coursework Masters, 3 years for research Masters and PhD, and 18 months for vocational graduates.

March 2024

Higher English Requirements

The minimum IELTS score increased from 6.0 to 6.5 overall, with no individual band below 5.5. The test validity period was cut from 3 years to just 1 year. An expired English test, even by a week, will invalidate your application.

July 2024

Graduate Certificates Removed

Graduate certificates no longer qualify under the Post-Higher Education Work stream as of 1 July 2024. Graduate diplomas may still qualify but only where directly related to a prior bachelor, masters, or PhD program commenced in the same or next academic year.

December 2024

Eligible Qualifications Update

Further changes to the list of eligible qualifications for the Post-Higher Education Work stream came into effect on 14 December 2024. If you completed your degree close to this date, your eligibility may be affected and requires specific legal assessment.

How to Apply

The application process, step by step

The 485 is time-sensitive. A missed step or a late AFP check can mean refusal. Here is how a well-managed application looks.

1

Step 1

Confirm Eligibility

Verify your qualification, age, study period, and visa history meet all current requirements with a registered migration lawyer.

2

Step 2

English Test

Book and sit your IELTS (or equivalent) within 12 months of your planned lodge date. Ensure all four bands meet the required minimums.

3

Step 3

AFP Check

Apply for your Australian Federal Police check before, not on the same day as, your 485 application. Timing errors here cause refusals.

4

Step 4

Gather Documents

Compile qualification certificates, transcripts, English test results, health insurance, passport, and all identity documents.

5

Step 5

Lodge via ImmiAccount

Submit your complete application online through ImmiAccount and pay the application fee. You will be issued a Bridging Visa while it is assessed.

After the 485

Your pathway to permanent residency

The 485 visa is not just a temporary stay. It is a launchpad. The work experience and points you accumulate open direct routes to permanent residence.

189

Skilled Independent

A points-based permanent visa requiring no employer or state sponsor. Ideal if you reach the required points score through work experience and skills.

190

Skilled Nominated

Permanent residence through state or territory nomination. Living and working in that state during your 485 strengthens your nomination case significantly.

491

Skilled Regional (Provisional)

A regional pathway that, after 3 years of living and working regionally, leads to the subclass 191 permanent visa. Regional study on your 485 is a strong foundation.

482

Skills in Demand

Employer-sponsored temporary visa (replaced TSS from December 2024). Work experience gained on your 485 makes you a far more attractive sponsored candidate.

186

Employer Nomination Scheme

Permanent employer-sponsored residency. Generally requires 3 years of skilled work in your nominated role, which your 485 period counts toward.

500

Return to Study?

From July 2024, current or former 485 holders must apply for a new Student visa from outside Australia. Offshore lodgement is now required to upskill and re-enter.

Frequently Asked Questions

485 visa questions, answered honestly

The 485 comes with a lot of complexity. These are the questions we are most commonly asked. If yours is not here, book a free consultation and we will answer it directly.

Can I apply for the 485 visa if am already outside Australia?

No. You must be physically located in Australia when you lodge your 485 application. This is a strict requirement. There is a limited exception for "subsequent entrant" family members who may be offshore, but the primary applicant must be onshore. If you have already left Australia after finishing your studies, you cannot lodge a 485 application until you return to Australia on another eligible visa, which is complex and often not possible.

I studied a Graduate Certificate. Am I still eligible?

No, not for applications lodged from 1 July 2024. Graduate certificates were removed from the list of eligible qualifications. If you completed a graduate certificate after that date, it will not count for a 485 application. If you completed it before 1 July 2024 and lodged your application before that date, the old rules may still apply to your application. Graduate diplomas may still qualify, but only where they were directly related to a prior bachelor, masters, or doctoral program and commenced in the same or immediately following academic year.

How long does 485 visa processing take?

Processing times vary and are published on the Department of Home Affairs website. Processing times change regularly and can range from weeks to several months depending on application volume, the completeness of your application, and your individual circumstances. Importantly, once you lodge a valid application, you will be issued a Bridging Visa A which allows you to remain in Australia legally while your application is processed. This means you do not have to leave Australia while you wait, but you should be aware of any travel restrictions that apply to your Bridging Visa if you plan to travel.

What is the regional extension, and how does it work?

If you held a first Post-Higher Education Work Stream 485 visa and spent at least two years living and studying in a designated regional area of Australia, you may be eligible for a second 485 visa under the "Second Post-Higher Education Work Stream." This gives you an additional 1 to 2 years in Australia, depending on your regional location. This is a valuable extension for graduates who studied regionally, but the two-year regional living and studying requirement is strict, and you must have consistently lived and studied in that regional area throughout the required period.

My IELTS score is from 18 months ago. Can I still use it?

No. Since 23 March 2024, English language test results must have been taken no more than 12 months before the date you lodge your 485 application. A test taken 18 months ago is no longer valid, regardless of how strong your score was. You will need to resit. This catches many applicants off guard, particularly those who planned ahead with an older test result. Book your test as close as practical to your expected lodgement date, ensuring you still have time to retake if needed.

Do I have to work in my field of study on the 485 visa?

Not under the Post-Higher Education Work stream. You can work in any occupation in any industry, with no conditions relating to your field of study. This is one of the significant advantages of this stream. However, if you want to build toward a skills-based permanent visa, working in a role that is closely related to your qualification is strongly recommended, as it generates the skilled employment evidence you will need for points-tested or employer-sponsored visa pathways.

I am 38 years old with a Master's by coursework. Can I still apply?

Unfortunately, no. The age limit for the Post-Higher Education Work stream is now under 35 for Bachelor and Master's (coursework) graduates. The under-50 exception only applies to graduates of Master's by research or Doctoral (PhD) programs, and to Hong Kong or British National Overseas passport holders. A 38-year-old coursework Masters graduate would not meet the age requirement. This is one of the most significant changes from the July 2024 reforms. It is worth speaking with us to explore alternative visa options that may still give you a pathway to stay in Australia.

What English tests are accepted, and what scores do I need?

The Department of Home Affairs accepts IELTS (Academic and General Training), PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency, and OET, among others. For IELTS, you need an overall score of at least 6.5, with no individual band (listening, reading, writing, speaking) below 5.5. Equivalent scores are required for other accepted tests. From 7 August 2025, the IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) is accepted for the 485, which means you can improve one band score by retaking only that component rather than the full test. Your test results must have been taken within 12 months of your application lodge date.

Can I include my partner and children in my 485 application?

Yes. You can include your partner (spouse or de facto) and dependent children in your 485 application. They must meet health and character requirements. Secondary applicants receive the same rights to live, work, and study in Australia as the primary visa holder. Your partner may also be entitled to Medicare benefits depending on their country of nationality and applicable bilateral healthcare agreements. Note that accompanying dependents applying for the Second Post-Higher Education Work Stream must be in Australia to apply.

Does online study count towards the Australian study requirement?

Generally, no. Online study undertaken outside of Australia does not count toward the minimum two academic year Australian study requirement. However, there is an important COVID-19 exception: online study completed between 1 February 2020 and 25 November 2023, even if undertaken outside Australia, may still count under temporary concession arrangements. From 25 November 2023, the pre-COVID rules returned, and any study done remotely from outside Australia no longer counts. Your study must have been physically completed in Australia to satisfy the requirement.

Why should I use a migration lawyer rather than a migration agent or lodging myself?

Migration agents and migration lawyers are both registered practitioners, but lawyers have additional obligations, legal training, and the ability to provide legal advice and representation in court or tribunal proceedings. For straightforward applications with no complications, an experienced registered agent may be adequate. However, if your application involves anything complex, such as a prior visa refusal, a cancelled visa history, any character issues, a borderline qualification, a missing English test, or a potential appeal, having a lawyer is a meaningful advantage. At My Migration Lawyers, we assess each application critically and tell you honestly where the risks are, rather than simply lodging and hoping for the best.

Can I apply for a Student visa (subclass 500) to upskill while on the 485?

You can study on your 485 visa. However, from July 2024, if you want to apply for a new Student visa, you cannot do so while you are in Australia as a current or former 485 visa holder. You would need to leave Australia and apply for the Student visa from offshore. This is a significant change designed to stop "visa hopping" and has affected many graduates who wanted to complete a higher qualification as a stepping stone to permanent residency. Discuss this with us before making any decisions, as there may be more appropriate alternative pathways available.

I hold an Indian passport. Are there any special rules for me?

Yes. Under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), Indian passport holders who graduated with a Bachelor's degree may be eligible for an additional year of stay on their 485 visa. This is a bilateral agreement benefit, and the specific eligibility conditions and implementation details should be confirmed with a migration lawyer, as the application of this agreement can depend on the type of degree, graduation date, and current Department of Home Affairs policy. Do not assume the benefit applies automatically to your situation.

How many 485 visas can I hold in total?

The Department limits how many 485 visas you can hold. Generally, you are limited to one Post-Higher Education Work stream visa, one Second Post-Higher Education Work stream visa (if you qualify on regional grounds), and one Post-Vocational Education Work stream visa. The COVID-era Replacement stream is now closed to new applications. This means the 485 visa is a finite opportunity for most graduates, which makes it all the more important to use the time strategically and to plan your pathway to permanent residency from the very beginning of your 485 period.

What documents do I need to lodge a 485 application?

A complete 485 application typically requires your valid passport, qualification certificate and academic transcripts, evidence of your enrollment and completion dates, English language test results (from within the past 12 months), an Australian Federal Police check application receipt (applied for before your 485 lodgement), Overseas Visitors Health Cover policy documents, and evidence of your current visa. If you are including family members, you will need their identity documents, relationship evidence, and health insurance. The exact requirements depend on your individual circumstances, and missing or incorrect documents are among the most common reasons applications are delayed or refused.

Can I travel in and out of Australia while on the 485 visa?

Yes. The 485 visa generally allows multiple entries to Australia during the visa period, meaning you can travel overseas and return freely while the visa is valid. However, if your 485 has not yet been granted and you are on a Bridging Visa A, the rules are very different. A Bridging Visa A does not allow you to re-enter Australia if you leave. In that situation, you would need to apply for a Bridging Visa B before travelling, which is only granted in limited circumstances. Travelling while on a bridging visa without the correct permissions can mean you are refused re-entry to Australia.

My friend got a 485 visa with a Diploma of Business. Can I do the same?

Possibly not, and you should not rely on your friend's experience. The Post-Vocational Education Work stream requires that your qualification is closely related to an occupation on the skilled occupation list, and you must obtain a positive skills assessment. The rules have tightened significantly since mid-2023. Generic business, project management, or administration qualifications are now heavily scrutinised and frequently refused because the Department requires a clear, direct nexus between the qualification and a specific listed occupation. Your situation is unique and needs individual assessment based on current Department policy, not a precedent from a prior year.

What happens if my 485 visa application is refused?

A refusal is serious but not always the end of the road. Depending on the ground of refusal and the type of decision, you may have the right to seek a review at the Administrative Review Tribunal (formerly the Administrative Appeals Tribunal). Review rights and time limits are specified in the refusal letter, and strict deadlines apply. This is where having a migration lawyer rather than an agent is particularly valuable: lawyers can represent you in AAT proceedings and have the legal training to identify merits-based arguments for review. Acting quickly after a refusal is critical.

Do I need health insurance to apply for the 485 visa?

Yes. You need Overseas Visitors Health Cover (OVHC) for the 485 visa. If you currently hold a Student visa, you will be covered by Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) as a student visa condition. When your student visa expires and your 485 visa commences, your OSHC coverage ends and you need OVHC to take over. It is recommended to arrange your OVHC to start from the day your student visa expires and to provide evidence of this when you lodge your 485 application. Depending on your nationality, you may also be entitled to Medicare under a bilateral reciprocal healthcare agreement.
